Superliga Argentina: Week 9
An interesting mid-week for the the Argentinian sides in the Copa Libertadores. We correctly identified that River Plate would win in Peru and that it would take into the second half to do so.
Colon got off to a winning start thanks to a 90th minute winner from Farias. We also correctly suggested that Boca Juniors could disappoint, which they indeed do, in a 2-0 loss in Columbia. Last seasons surprise package, Talleres continued their good form with a hard fought win, while Estudiantes smashed Velez 4-1 in the all Argentinian match-up.

Atletico Tucuman vs Gimnasia La Plata
Atletico Tucuman is undoubtedly the worst team we have seen so far this season, they are at the bottom of the table and have managed to win only one game out of the eight they have played so far, on the other hand we have Gimnasia, who have recently won in the last match against Talleres, having a great game. It’s a well assembled team that has managed to adapt to the style of game of their great coach Nestor Gorosito. If we add to this the fact that they have great indivudual talents, our clear favourite is Gimnasia.

Union Santa Fe vs Newells Old Boys
Union is a strong team, which has surprised everyone so far, as nobody expected them to have such a positive start to the season as they have had in previous years. However, we have to take into account that they are coming from a Copa Sudamericana match on Wednesday, so we can expect them to rest their first team players. Newell’s have been showing that their team, full of young players, is ready to fight the tournament. They have won five of their eight games so far. For all these reasons we believe that Newell’s are the favourites.

Rosario Central vs Santa Fe
Rosario have had a weak start this year, being at the bottom of the table and having fired their coach last week. Despite having great players, they have not been able to adapt to a tactical idea, and now they have the challenge of improving under new coach Leandro Somoza, but no doubt it will take time to do so. Colon come from playing Copa Libertadores on Tuesday, so they will probably use an alternative team to face Rosario, and so give rest to the starters. It’s a difficult match to predict, but we can expect a win for Central or most probably a draw.
Velez Sarsfield vs Boca Juniors
Both teams have just played Copa Libertadores in midweek, so both are likely to present mostly alternative teams, with a lot of players who usually occupy a place on the bench. For this reason it is very difficult to predict how the match will unfold. We can take into account as important factors that Velez is playing at home, but also that Boca has better substitute players. Our favourite is Boca, although a draw would be the expected result.
River Plate vs Argentinos Juniors
River are coming off a Copa Libertadores game on Wednesday, so they will probably play with an alternative team, resting their first-choice players. However, even River’s reserve team is still superior to the other teams in the country. On the other hand Argentinos is coming along very well, winning the last two games they played, and being in fourth place in the table. They are a team with great players and very dynamic, so determining the outcome of this match is complicated. River as always is the favourite, no matter the context, but as they are playing with substitutes and Argentinos is coming with a great level, it would not be strange to see a draw.
Platense vs Racing Club
Racing is one of the best teams in the tournament so far, being first in the table and showing an amazing level. However, they are coming off the back of Thursday’s Copa Sudamericana game, so we are likely to see them play with a lot of substitutes to give rest to those who regularly make up the starting eleven. Platense on the other hand come in very weak, they have lost their last five games, and this week they have fired their coach. We can expect a draw or a win for Racing.
