Week 27 – Ligue 1 Betting Tips | French Football Betting

Welcome back to some more Ligue 1 focus.  The league is beginning to really tighten up.  Not in terms of who will be champion.  That is done and dusted. But, the race for European places stretches all the way back to Montpellier in 11th.The relegation battle is also wide open.  Clermont in 15th are likely safe.  But the rest, from 16th downwards, are only separated by two points and matching each other blow for blow at the moment.

Here are the latest betting odds for Ligue 1 at the time of publishing:

LORIENT v LYON

Let us start with the Friday night game.  If you are not a regular watcher of Ligue 1 you would likely see Lyon and think that they must be a hot favourite.  And the odds would certainly peg them as that.  However, it is worth noting that Lorient have, in their last 4 games, beaten RC Lens and Stade Brestois, drawn with Monaco and only narrowly lost to a spritely Montpellier.  That is to say, Lorient are much improved, having not won in the 16 games before this current run. Manager Christophe Pelissier has shifted his tactics and personnel, dropping Enzo Le Fee and solidifying the midfield and defence.  At the same time it seems Peter Bosz’s Lyon are never far from their next mini-crisis.  Having been on a solid run, recent losses to rivals for European football Monaco and Lille and draw against Lens have seen the coach’s tactics and selections come into question.  Lyon are so up and down, their defence, as with all Bosz teams, is fickle and often looks confused.  So, while the odds suggest Lyon are clear favourites I would suggest that this trip to the Stade du Moustoir could well be a great deal more difficult than it seems.

OGC NICE v PSG

The big Saturday evening fixture looks, on paper, like a belter.  First versus third.  The big money of INEOS versus the even bigger money of Qatar Sports Investments.  Pochettino versus the mastermind Galtier.  The odds suggest a PSG win and pretty easily.  Again, I would beg to differ.  PSG have not beaten Nice this season.  They drew 0 – 0 in Paris earlier in the season.  Nice then knocked PSG out of the cup a few weeks ago.  In both matches Nice did not concede a goal to an often prolific PSG attack.  And that is down to their manager, Cristophe Galtier.  He is the master of defence.  Nice have the best defence in Ligue 1 this season, only conceding 21 goals. Goalkeeper Walter Benitez, now a naturalised Frenchman, is being hyped as a potential France call up.  Todibo and Dante are a superb central partnership.  They have had some wobbles recently, most notably against Lyon and especially Clermont, but seem to turn up for games against PSG.  Their talent going forward is also not to be sniffed at with a masterful Amine Gouiri and resurgent Justin Kluivert always a threat.  Galtier remains one of the most underrated managers in Europe.

Pochettino, on the other hand, has nearly a full squad to select from but a hugely important Champions League tie just four days after this.  I imagine rotation may well come into play.  That will only play into Nice’s hands. I would say that PSG are favourites and have become masters at playing badly and still winning this season. Kylian Mbappe is probably the best player in the world right now. However, the odds put it too firmly in PSG’s favour.  OGC Nice are not to be taken lightly, especially at home.

RENNES v ANGERS

Now, these are odds that I can get behind.  Bruno ‘Pep’ Genesio has got this young, hyper-talented Rennes team purring.  And that has been with Jeremy Doku and Kamaldeen Sulemana both out with injury.  Angers are on a five-game losing streak and have not looked anywhere near the same team they were earlier in the season.  To make matters worse for Angers, Doku is back.  What I will say is that despite some difficulties putting the ball in the back of the net recently Angers do have the talent to notch one or maybe even two against Rennes.  Rennes though are the attacking kings at the moment.  They have out four past Montpellier and Troyes in consecutive games and also hit ailing Bordeaux for six recently.  The combination of Martin Terrier, Gaetan Laborde supplied by Benjamin Bourigeaud and Lovro Majer and the never stopping Hamari Traore is almost irresistible. Add Doku to the mix, especially coming against tired legs and Rennes have too many ways to beat Angers.  Their march towards the European places will more than likely continue this weekend.

NANTES v MONTPELLIER

Nantes are set as clear favourites here, and that does feel about right on recent form.  Montpellier are on a run of one win in five games.  Nantes, on the other hand, have only lost one in eight. Bearing in mind Nantes avoided the drop last season by winning the relegation play off at the end of the season, their re-emergence under oft-maligned manager Antoine Kombouare has been spectacular.  They are dreaming of European football once again.  Nantes are powered by the underrated Ludovic Blas and the even more underrated combo of Pedro Chirivella and Andrei Girotto with goals coming from the ever dangerous Moses Simon and Frankfurt-bound Randal Kolo Muani.  They are also sturdy at the back with the future France international keeper Albin Lafont in the form of his life (see his performance against PSG).  And yet, Montpellier have one very special weapon.  Teji Savanier.  When he is on form he is unplayable.  And he drags Montpellier with him.  A home town boy and fierce competitor (sometimes too fierce, a yellow card is never far away) Savanier is a genius both in open play and from set pieces.  It feels like a trope to say that Montpellier are due a win, but they really are due something.  They are a talented side and, I suppose, as a long term French football watcher, I always feel like Nantes’ next big slip up is never far away.
