Superliga Argentina: Week 7
We’re back with week 7 of the Argentina Liga Professional de Football.
Last weekend left us with big surprises such as the unprecedented defeats of River and Boca, who are going through a tough time in football. The surprising victory of Rosario Central, the great draw between Newell’s and Platense and the solid victory of Racing that we were able to predict correctly. And also the important victories of Colon and Argentinos Juniors, in matches that we predicted as possible draws.
Racing vs Newell’s Old Boys
This will undoubtedly be the most exciting match of the day, as it confronts the two teams with the best present and current situation in the country, Racing comes with high morale since last weekend they beat their biggest rival Independiente in what was the Clasico de Avellaneda, showing a very solid team with great individual performances such as Gabriel Hauche and Emiliano Vecchio, who unfortunately retired with a tear after having played a great first half.
Newell’s is at the top of the table, and is looking to continue with the good performance they have shown so far, despite drawing the last two games, which they deserved to have won.
Either of the two teams can take the victory, as being the two best, it will be defined by details. Our prediction is a draw.
Gimnasia de la Plata vs Colon
After a great start to the season, which currently has them in second place in the table, Gimnasia lost their undefeated streak of 12 games against Atletico Tucuman this past weekend, losing 0-2. However the team is playing well and is expected to continue on the right track with the style of play that has given them so many good results.
On the other side we have Colon, a strong team that is dedicating 100% to the local league after being eliminated from the Copa Libertadores. They have just beaten Velez 2-1 in a great game, with an extraordinary goal from their striker Ramon Abila.
Our favorite for this match is Gimnasia, especially considering that if they win they will probably reach the top of the standings and they will have the pressure to do so since they are playing at home.

Rosario Central vs Independiente
Rosario is coming off its first win in a long time, the first with Carlos Tevez as coach, which was a great boost for the whole team. The win was 1-0 against Sarmiento.
Now they face Independiente, a team totally in crisis, who have just lost their coach Eduardo Dominguez who was sacked after the 0-1 defeat against Racing. The team, which now has no coach, is in a football and political crisis and their fans are fed up with it, as they seem to be in free fall and there is no one to lift them up.
Neither of the two teams are in a good moment, so a draw is the most expected result.
River Plate vs Velez Sarsfield
Velez returns to face River for the third time this month, after the two Copa Libertadores matches in which, in a very polemic way due to a refereeing error, Velez ended up advancing to the quarter finals.
Despite the refereeing error, Velez are playing better and better under the guidance of their manager Alexander Medina, and with a team full of young players, with midfielders Nicolas Garayalde and Maximo Perrone being the stars of the show. Velez are coming off a 2-1 defeat last weekend against Colon in a hard fought match.
For their part River is in a process of reformation, after the big blow that meant being eliminated from the Copa Libertadores, they were defeated by Godoy Cruz 0-2 at home, a result that no one expected. It won’t be long before this giant can get back on its feet, and this match against Velez is the perfect opportunity to do so and to take revenge in the process. We have to add that the star striker of the Colombian national team, Miguel Borja, was signed this week by the team managed by Marcelo Gallardo, and it will be up to the coach to decide if he makes his debut against Velez.
It is a very difficult result to predict, a draw would be the most logical considering what we saw in the past meetings of these two teams, although we would not be surprised if River get a win.
Boca Juniors vs Talleres
Boca are going through their toughest week so far this year, after the unexpected elimination on penalties in the Copa Libertadores against Corinthians, their coach Sebastian Battaglia was sacked because of some statements that the management did not like, and then their captain Carlos Izquierdoz was taken out of the starting team and sent to the substitutes’ bench without any explanation. Last weekend the team lost 1-2 against San Lorenzo showing no desire to play, with the players clearly affected by this moment the institution is going through.
Talleres are in high spirits after advancing in the Copa Libertadores, leaving Colon out, and last weekend they played with a team with a large number of substitute players, and were defeated 0-2 against Barracas Central.
The most expected result is a victory for Boca, we hope that they will pick up their game once and for all, especially considering that they are playing at home in front of their own fans.
Argentinos Juniors vs Barracas Central
Argentinos Juniors is coming off a 2-1 win over Tigre last weekend in a thrilling match. And they are playing very well, slowly getting back to the level that led them to fight for the Copa de la Liga until the end in the first half of the year. This is partly due to the great level of its midfielders, especially Fausto Vera and Javier Cabrera, who recovered from his injury in an excellent way and is playing outstandingly.
Barracas Central comes from playing against River in Copa Argentina last Wednesday, so it will arrive with a tired team, which will probably use substitute players.
We expect a win for Argentinos Juniors.
San Lorenzo vs Banfield
San Lorenzo beat Boca 2-1 this past weekend, which has lifted everyone’s spirits to accompany the team’s resurgence under coach Ruben Insua. However, it was not all positive for San Lorenzo, as their young defender Jeremias James suffered a serious knee injury, which will keep him out of action for several months.
On the other hand Banfield comes in a great moment, winning four of the last six games, with the figure of Ramiro Enrique, a young striker who is being a trend in Argentina these last weeks, as he went from being a complete unknown to score two goals per game, the promise of Banfield is in a great moment and helps the team to have great performances.
We expect a win for Banfield, although San Lorenzo is in a good moment, we do not expect it to be enough to get a good result, especially considering that Banfield will be playing at home.
