MLS 2022 Week 20 | MLS Betting Tips

Kris Brown – AKA MLS Card Guy – is our resident serious Major League Soccer expert.

Kris’s passion for the MLS really took off during the 2018 season in which he was a part of the team at DC United that opened Audi Field and welcomed Wayne Rooney to the MLS. He is now in his second season with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL. Kris likes to follow D.C United, Cincinnati, Seattle, and Atlanta.

His favorite player in the MLS is Luciano Acosta, but past favorites include Clint Dempsey and Kevin Paredes. The most iconic game he attended came at Audi field against Orlando in 2018, Wayne Rooney famously chased down an Orlando player who was racing towards an open DC goal, expertly tackled the ball away to save the draw, then unleashed a laser from midfield that Acosta headed in to complete the hat trick and seal the win.

A few things to note before we start diving into the games for this week. Some teams could be considering some rotation for various reasons. Many MLS teams played big european teams in friendlies during the midweek which shouldn’t factor into rotation worries, but you never know how hard the teams were pushing trying to make a good impression. Some did (Charlotte and Minnesota) some most certainly did not (DC, Miami). Final note for this week is the final big midweek of cup action will take place next week. The Final of the Canadian Championship will be between Vancouver and Toronto so expect some rotation from both teams (although for Toronto who knows what rotation means, they have so many players that are half ready to play). The semifinals of the US Open Cup will also be contested with NY Red Bulls and Orlando on one side and Sporting Kansas City and second tier Sacramento Republic on the other side. Expect all 3 teams to rotate pretty heavily this weekend and go all out to try and put a trophy on the shelf.

MLS Betting Tips – Week 20

MLS Betting – Game Week 20 Preview

DC United vs Montreal

Eventually Wayne Rooney is going to take the reins of this team and he will have his work cut out for him. DC is totally lifeless at the moment and even at home I am happy to fade them. During the Bayern friendly (which I was in attendance for) the “first team” still showed very little energy or will to play and Bayern whipped them 3-0 in the first half. The second half had more youngsters (for both teams but Mueller, Kimmich, De Ligt, and Coman played the second half so Bayern still had a ton of veteran star power on the field) and DC was energetic and played much more competitively (the half ended 2-2). That’s a bad sign for the first team guys and the lack of Taxi Fountas in the friendly tells me he is a game time decision at best. Until they prove me wrong I will keep on fading DC.

Sporting KC vs Los Angeles FC

I get that this will be played in Kansas City, but how in the world is LAFC only a 2.12 favorite? SKC has had a horrible season (albeit they have been somewhat competent lately) LAFC has had a fantastic season and is integrating two world class players into the squad, plus SKC is very likely to rotate before their USOC Semi final on Wednesday. Even if this was SKC’s 1st team I would like LAFC but I don’t think we see the full 1st choice squad.

MLS Betting – Over 2.5 Goals Betting Odds

Seattle vs Colorado Rapids

Now feels like about the time for Seattle to start to really turn things on, they have lost 3 straight for the second time this season, they have only ever had 2 4+ game losing streaks. Colorado has been able to put together some decent performances at home, but they haven’t won a road game yet this season. Colorado has owned the series lately 3 Wins and 1 loss in the last 6, but before this stretch Seattle was completely dominant winning 20 of the first 25 meetings between the clubs.

Austin vs New York Red Bulls

We covered this on THAT betting podcast with Predictology last week, Austin is not getting enough credit for what they have been able to do this season. Yes, they have had some flukey goal luck that at some point should probably regress to the mean. However, they have done a ton of damage on the road already and have a bunch of home games coming up. They

welcome a Red Bulls team who has one eye on the USOC Semi next week against Orlando and isn’t particularly good in Texas anyway. The Red Bulls have won only 1 of their last 7 road games in the state of Texas, probably due to the fact that it is almost impossible to press as hard as they do for 90’ in the Texas heat. Austin is tough to beat at home and the Red Bulls could rotate.
